imprisonment in the real madrid camp
is this some elaborate commentary on why the Special One has some of the best attacking players in europe but insists on formatting his teams on defensive superiority? is this a metaphor for the underperformance of those attacking players over the last half-season's time - does mourihno have them locked away in their own brains?
or is it only funny because i like soccer and don't know spanish or portuguese or brazilian?

night shift
other than the sounders and their rubbish gameplay of late, good things have been happening in my world.

MLS 2011
2011 will be a difficult year. in 2012 the mayan calendar expires and, theoretically, so does the world. if you're the sort that invests any more than a passing thought in this notion, 2011 could perhaps be rather nerve wracking. you could spend the year taking adventures you never had the chance to. you could spend the year looting. you could spend the year learning a skill. you could spend the year a nervous wreck, locked inside your room with only a full bedpan as company.
or you could spend the year following the cutthroat new MLS rivalry here in Cascadia. in 2011 both vancouver and portland get their football clubs and join seattle's sounders in major league play. with major teams stretching from british columbia to southern california, the west coast will be brimming with talent and passionate competition.
this is my biggest problem with 2011. because i'm not invested in the apocalypse of 2012 i am burdened with having to support the sounders fc while the portland timbers, essentially my home team, go MLS. first and foremost i am a sounders fan but i am also very attached to portland. the most difficult part of this situation, however, is that only now am i picking sides in a rivalry that extends back to the mid-1970s when NASL was the only semi-major league in the US. the timbers and sounders have been swinging at one another for years and now it is all coming to a head.
however i watched the sounders go major, bought a scarf and will never look back. season tickets next summer.

hull city fc
it has been a long, hard season for the tigers. the premiership rarely grants any favours but, in the end, their fate rested on the relegation of newcastle. every hull city fan looks forward to one more year in the top flight for a 105 year old football club.

hull v. millwall
four months later and ten days before coming home i finally went to my first proper english football match. i have to say it's everything i thought it would be, replete with riotous fans. here are some fotos of the hull city v. millwall match. it was hosted here in hull at the KC stadium.
you'll have to forgive the brevity & low-fi quality of the video. i took it on a bad camera without trying to look like a foreigner. they say that american football matches are loud, notably denver's mile high coliseum. the KC stadium only seats 20,000 (as opposed to larger clubs like manchester united's old trafford with 80,000+ capacity) but i guarantee it gets louder than any football stadium in the US.

the pitch. hull city are in orange & black and millwall wears blue. it was the tigers vs. the lions, respectively.

home stands.

away stands. click on the photo and go to my flickr to see a larger version of this: the millwall fans are plagued by riots and post-match fights (instigated by them). four mounted police arrived after half-time and a line of police had to create a buffer between millwall and hull city fans.

the gang.
hull city won the match 2-0, giving millwall and their shit supporters a decent thrashing. the millwall fans are, if you're familiar with american football, similar to the fans of the oakland raiders. they're not so much there to enjoy a nice saturday match as start fights with the other team's fans. their motto is something like "if you can't beat 'em, kill 'em in the parking lot." they were allowed to leave the stadium after hull city fans left and under police escort to a private parking lot where they boarded coaches. pretty funny stuff.
